Dental Issues

Bad Breath (halitosis):

Is caused by many reasons. The main cause is foul-smelling bacteria that is left in the mouth. Proper home care including daily brushing, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash and scraping the bacteria from your tongue will greatly reduce your chances of having bad breath. Some other causes are certain foods (garlic and onions), sinus infections, gum disease, xerostomia (dry mouth), acid reflux, uncontrolled diabetes and certain systemic illnesses.

Form when plaque (film of live bacteria) is allowed to accumulate on and between the tooth surfaces. The bacteria produces acid that break down the enamel surface of the tooth.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia):

Is very common and can happen for many reasons. Many medications will have this side effect.  Dry mouth can make you more susceptible to periodontal disease and cavities. Drink plenty of water, and do not use products containing a high alcohol content.

Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease):

Is caused by bacteria in the mouth that affects the supporting bone and tissue. The bacteria causes an infection that left untreated leads to loss of teeth. Three out of four adults have some form of periodontal disease. Other risk factors include: smoking, certain medications, genetics, clench/grinding, and systemic problems (diabetes).

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint):

Is a ball and socket joint which is part of a large group of bones, muscles and ligaments that work efficiently together to allow you to talk and chew in comfort. TMJ disorders are very common. You may have pain in your jaw, headaches, popping or clicking noises. Every patient and cause of TMD is different. Trauma, clenching/grinding or malocclusion (teeth not aligned correctly) are all possible causes of TMD. Let our office know if you experience any of these problems.

General Tooth Sensitivity:

Is very common and can be caused by many reasons.  Recession of the gum tissue which exposes the
root system of the tooth (which does not have enamel) can make teeth extremely sensitive. This can be treated by either over the counter sensitivity toothpaste and/or medication applied to the surface within the dental office, laser treatment is also now available.

Tooth Erosion:

Is the physical or chemical wearing away of the enamel surface.  There are several reasons this may occur; acid reflux, soda's or acidic foods, eating disorders and consistent placement of candy or cough drops in the same area, toothbrush abrasion and clenching or grinding teeth can all contribute to erosion of the teeth.

Has been found to be a contributing factor in the cause of periodontal disease and can drastically effect the outcome of your dental treatment. Smoking or using chewing tobacco can make you four times more likely to develop oral cancer and periodontal disease. You are more susceptible for increases plaque and tarter build up, bone loss and loss of teeth, bad breath, mouth sores, poor healing and gum recession. We highly advise you to quit.
